No one is an island. Every family consists of an interconnected, interdependent group of unique individuals where each person’s well-being will affect everyone else’s.
When everything is going smoothly, families enjoy balance and harmony. However, it’s easy for friction and shared or individual challenges to interfere with family relationships. Events such as financial hardship, job loss, divorce, remarriage, birth of a child, or the death of a loved one affects everyone in different ways. Further, mental and physical health concerns that affect one member–like depression, substance misuse, chronic illness, history of childhood trauma or neglect and eating disorders–can have ripple effects that end up impacting the entire family.If there are underlying problems like communication issues, interpersonal conflicts and/or behavioral concerns, ordinary stressors and challenges can become overwhelming
The role of family counseling is to promote awareness, understanding and collaboration to resolve problems.
Family therapy will explore triggers and mental health concerns for members of the family in a safe, supportive and non-judgmental environment. We help family members access greater empathy and understanding to decrease conflict. How sessions are structured depends on the family’s specific needs. The number of family members who attend each session can vary, depending on therapy goals. Individual counseling may be recommended to supplement family sessions. However, the goals always remain the same: to help everyone develop and maintain healthy boundaries; create cohesion and connectedness; and improve communication and relationships.
Telehealth Options
In-Person and Virtual Counseling
We offer both in-person and/or virtual counseling sessions. Both are HIPAA-compliant. Virtual (on-line) therapy consists of meeting with your therapist via a video conferencing platform on your computer, tablet or phone. Virtual counseling (teletherapy) is a relatively new way to receive care. If you’re thinking about it, here are some benefits to consider:
- Convenience in meeting with a therapist from the comfort of your own home
- No time spent traveling to appointments
- Access to care providers with specialized expertise regardless of their geographic location
Many insurance companies now cover virtual therapy. Always check with your insurance provider regarding your coverage for mental health services.
